Ken Decker is a Master drum maker.
These are the same type of drums Southeast Alaska Natives use at their
ceremonies today and in the past. Ken uses Sitka blacktail deer skins and Alaska
yellow cedar for his drums. His traditional designs reflect his Tsimshian
ancestry. All of his drums are hand painted by him. He also teaches others how
to make drums to keep his culture alive.
The pictures above are a small sampling of what Ken has to offer. Some other designs that are not pictured are the Eagle Bear, Eagle with Sun Rising and Raven with frog to name a few. All the drums are in various sizes from 8" to 19" with many sizes in between.
All of Ken's silk screen prints are done by him "on my kitchen table" as he likes to tell people. They are sold unframed and are various sizes. The smaller Bentwood box design measures at 13"x20" with the larger one measuring at 28"x20", the Four Clans measures at 20"x14", the Eagle Wolf design measures at 22"x24" and the Wolf design measures at 16"x19". All of the measurements are approximate.
Alder Grease Bowl with small Alder Spoon
Wolf Design.This bowl measures 10 1/4 inches
long and 3 3/4 inches tall and 6 inches wide.
It is also called a canoe Bowl.
Loon Bailer made from Alder measures 15 inches long 5 inches tall and 7 1/2 inches wide.
Yellow Cedar Totem Eagle on top of human holding salmon measures 17 inches tall.
Raven Shaman Rattle. Main structure is Raven (Box in Beak).
Top is 1/2 Man 1/2 Wolf and King Fisher.
Bottom is Hawk and Frog.
The Rattle measures 12 1/2 inches long 5 inches tall and 4 3/4 inches wide.
It is all one piece, split and hollowed Alder.
Hawk Man Mask. Made with Alder with inlaid abalone. Measures 4 inches deep 9 inches tall and 7 1/4 inches wide.
Bentwood Boxes and Chests.
Larger Chest is Red Cedar with a Bear design. Total height with lid 11 3/4 inches tall and 14 1/2 inches across the front.
Smaller Yellow Cedar Chest also with a bear design measures 7 3/8 inches high with lid and 11 inches across the front, the lid and the bottom of this chest are made from Red Cedar.
The Box measures 14 inches high with the lid and the width of the sides are 10 1/2 inches across. The design on this Red Cedar box is a Bear, Human and Wolf.
